What is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation that requires prompt attention from a dental professional to relieve pain, prevent further damage, or restore your oral health. We understand that these situations are often stressful and require immediate attention. That’s why we prioritize emergency care and do our best to see you as quickly as possible.
Some common dental emergencies we treat include:
- Severe, lasting toothaches or other types of tooth pain
- Lost dental restorations, such as fillings, crowns, or bridges
- Damage to the soft tissues of the mouth, including the tongue, lips, cheeks, and gums
- Cracked or fractured teeth
- Chipped or broken teeth
- Partially or fully knocked-out teeth
If you experience any of these issues—or another type of dental emergency—please call our office right away. Our team will guide you on how to care for your smile until you can come in for treatment.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency:
If you are dealing with a dental emergency, there are steps you can take to manage your situation until you can reach us:
- Severe Tooth Pain: Rinse your mouth with warm water and floss gently to remove any debris. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed.
- Lost Dental Restoration (Filling, Crown, etc.): If a filling or crown falls out, try to keep the area clean. You can temporarily seal the tooth with dental cement or sugar-free gum until we can reattach or replace it.
- Soft Tissue Injury (Gums, Tongue, Cheeks, Lips): Clean the affected area with warm water, apply pressure to stop any bleeding, and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. For severe bleeding, seek immediate medical help.
- Cracked or Broken Teeth: Save any pieces of the tooth if possible. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Take pain relievers as necessary, and contact us right away.
- Knocked-Out Tooth: If your tooth has been knocked out, carefully pick it up by the crown (not the root) and try to reinsert it into its socket. If you can’t reinsert it, place the tooth in a container of milk or a saline solution to preserve it. Time is of the essence, so contact us immediately.
When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention:
If you’ve experienced trauma to your head, neck, or jaw, or if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, we recommend visiting the emergency room or your general physician before coming to see us, even if your dental issue is a concern. Your health and safety are our top priorities, and we want to make sure any underlying injuries are addressed.
